At the radiator, there is a steel elbow that connects between the radiator core and the quick disconnect. Does that elbow screw onto or screw into the radiator core, and is this junction metal or plastic?

Snap the plastic cap onto the quick connect fitting. Ensure that the plastic cap is fully seated against the fitting. They may look fine but be very lose. If they are lose, you should really consider the bypass. Consider it an insurance policy for your transmission that costs under $100 and takes less than 30 minutes!
